Sadness, loss, a sense of longing – who couldn’t identify with these strong emotions at various points in their life? Fado, the musical genre that originated in Portugal in the 19th century, taps into a sense of melancholy like probably no other and has firmly established itself on the world music scene. Literally meaning ‘destiny’ or ‘fate’, Fado is also associated with the Portuguese word ‘saudade’ or longing.

Artists like Amália Rodrigues, Dulce Pontes, Carlos do Carmo, Mariza, Mafalda Arnauth, António Zambujo, Ana Moura, Camané, Carminho, Cesária Évora and others are world famous for this distinct style of music that is usally accompanied by a classical or Portuguese guitar.

Australian artist Lisa Gerrard is a female vocalist who has inspired me ever since her breakthrough debut album with Dead Can Dance came out in 1984. Hard to believe that this dynamic artist just turned 50! Here’s a post reflecting on her many successes.

I’ve always been fond of jazz music and one band that I’ve followed almost since its inception is the Pat Metheny Group. Currently comprised of Pat Metheny, Lyle Mays, Steve Rodby and Antonio Sanchez, the four-member group takes jazz and jazz fusion to a new level. The orchestration is an assortment of robotic instruments that Metheny controls with his guitar and foot pedals – a CD by the same name was released in 2010.

Whoever has been to a WOMAD festival knows that there’s not much that tops the experience – the sun shining over the many stages, stalls, artisans and small and big festival goers. Plus, the atmosphere of reaching out to each other and learning from each other through the universal languages of music, arts and dance make WOMAD such a unique experience.
