Music Quotes by Enya, Sarah Brightman & more…

Following the overwhelming response of my first post on music and life, here is another one that I hope you will enjoy as much. This time, I’ve tried to find quotes by fellow musicians about music and what it brings to their lives.

Music resonates with us so deeply because we connect with the emotion behind it. The emotion that the singer or composer felt when creating the piece. Here’s what some of my fellow artists and musicians have to say:

That emotion that I loved at some stage will evolve as a melody. – Enya.

Music quotes by Enya, Sarah Brightman, Vangelis and more.

Sound is God. – Ravi Shankar

The day you open your mind to music, you’re halfway to opening your mind to life. – Pete Townshend

More and more as time has gone on, I realize that playing is really more about listening than it is about playing. – Pat Metheny

But not only musicians have a lot to say about music, philosophers too. Here are some of my favorite quotes about music of some of the world’s greatest thinkers.

Music expresses that which cannot be said and on which it is impossible to be silent. – Victor Hugo

Without music, life would be a mistake. – Friedrich Nietzsche

The effect of music is so very much more powerful and penetrating than is that of the other arts, for these others speak only of the shadow, but music of the essence. – Arthur Schopenhauer

In terms of what music is, the following musicians have found beautiful analogies and ways to tap into the magic that music is.

Music is like a mirror in front of you. You’re exposing everything, but surely that’s better than suppressing. – Enya

The magic happens only when the artist serves with love and the listener receives with the same spirit. – Ravi Shankar

Music is the poetry of the air. – Jean Paul Richter

When I sing, I close my eyes. If I see a feather, everything is fine. Without this image in my mind, the sound is not ‘truthful’ enough and I must begin again. I have to. – Sarah Brightman

Music is a place to take refuge. It’s a sanctuary from mediocrity and boredom. It’s innocent and it’s a place you can lose yourself in thoughts, memories and intricacies. – Lisa Gerrard

Last but not least, artist and musician Yoko Ono muses about life:

Don’t ever give up on life. Life can be so beautiful, especially after you’ve spent a lot of time with it. – Yoko Ono

A dream you dream alone is only a dream. A dream you dream together is reality. – Yoko Ono

What images come to mind when you listen to your favorite song?

Music fills the infinite between two Souls. – Tagore

Music is the melody whose text is the world. – Arthur Schopenhauer

Music is that voice that tells us that the human race is greater than it knows. – Bonaparte

In this world, everything has a pulse or a vibration. This sound is unique to each living or non-living thing and in itself creates a music that no-one can hear. I believe that this has a very powerful resonance with, and a deep effect on, our lives. – Mike Oldfield

One of the rewards of success is freedom, the ability to do whatever you like. – Sting

Laughter is the tonic, the relief, the surcease for pain. – Charlie Chaplin

It is also interesting to see what musicians think about their role in creating music and songs; many feel it is the music guiding them rather than vice versa.

I function as a channel through which music emerges from the chaos of noise. – Vangelis

This music is not from my mind. It is from heaven, going through my body and out my fingers through composing. Sometimes I wonder. I never practice. I don’t read or write music, but my fingers move. I wonder, ‘Whose song is this?’ I write my songs, but they are not my songs. – Kitaro

I am an interpreter of music rather than a composer of it. – Sarah Brightman

“You are the first person you wake up with every morning and the last one you go to bed with every night. Treat yourself as you would your best friend.” — Marcomé
